SUMMARY:Natural Pest and Disease Management - My Smart Garden
DESCRIPTION:Experienced horticulturalist and presenter Kat Lavers will teach you how to manage common pests and diseases in your garden using simple natural methods. This workshop will include an indoor presentation and an outdoor portion where you will have a chance to see the Hunt Club’s beautiful garden and learn more about pest and disease management. Please note\, we will remain inside in the event of bad weather. \nTopics covered include: \n\nIdentifying pests and diseases\nAddressing the causes\nEncouraging beneficial insects\nPrevention\, management\, and treatment using natural methods\n\nPlease remember to wear sunscreen and a hat when outdoors. \nPlease note that this is an event for Naarm/Melbourne gardeners only. If you live outside this area\, please contact your council to find out what free sustainable gardening events are available locally. \nAccessibility: This event will be partially held outside where there is some uneven ground. \nIf you have any access or support questions or requirements in order to participate fully (eg. interpreter)\, please let us know at least two weeks prior to the event and we will be pleased to assist you.

SUMMARY:Follow Your Organic Waste Tour
DESCRIPTION:Small actions like correctly sorting your kitchen scraps and garden clippings into your food and garden organics bin can make a big impact. Your food and garden waste can be turned into compost instead of ending up in landfill. This helps conserve our valuable resources and minimise greenhouse gases. \nCome and find out how the food and garden waste collected from your kerbside is turned into nutrient rich composts and mulches at Veolia’s Bulla facility using their state-of-the-art technology. \nVeolia is working collaboratively with Brimbank City Council to divert organic material from landfill. This facility processes 85\,000 tonnes of organic material annually from 11 North-Western Councils. Learn more about our roundabouts project which used 150 tonnes of compost at 80 roundabouts in Brimbank. \nThe tour will depart from the Brimbank Community Civic Centre\, 301 Hampshire Road\, Sunshine at 10am. We will tour the facility\, speak to the staff overseeing operations and our minibus will return to Sunshine by 1:00pm. \nPlease note: You must wear covered flat shoes e.g. no high heels or sandals\, and appropriate clothes to cover your skin such as pants and long sleeves. You will be provided with a high visibility vest and safety glasses to wear on site. \nThis tour is only for people who live in Brimbank City Council.  \nSpaces are limited – please email environment@brimbank.vic.gov.au if you can no longer attend. \nRegister here
