The Friendship Code

The Friendship Code is a five-session wellbeing program helping students strengthen friendships and foster kindness within their school community.

The Friendship Code engages students in years five to eight in exploring what makes a good friend, how to communicate and resolve conflict and how to build positive, supportive peer relationships.

A school-based program delivered over five interactive no-cost sessions, the program creates a safe space for reflection, discussion and connection.

Key Topics:

  • Making and keeping friends
  • Communication (including online)
  • Being a supportive friend
  • Repairing friendships (apologies and forgiveness)
  • Kindness and empathy

Expressions of interest are open!

While we will do our best to accommodate your school’s preferences, our team’s capacity is limited.

Priority will be given to early expressions of interest and to schools that have not previously received the program.

If you have any questions, please contact us at bys@brimbank.vic.gov.au.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you run this program to students outside of years five to eight?

Brimbank Youth Services works with young people aged 10-25 years so are not able to work with students below year five.

While this program is currently designed for a younger cohort, some concepts may be tailored for older groups – please contact us at bys@brimbank.vic.gov.au to discuss suitability.

The program is delivered by one of our experienced youth workers, all of whom hold a current Working with Children Check (WWCC) and are trained in youth engagement and wellbeing facilitation.

Occasionally, we will have Youth Work placement students support program delivery, who also have valid Working with Children Checks.

The Friendship Code runs over five sessions (approximately one hour each), delivered onsite at your school.

Sessions are interactive, discussion-based and focus on building connection and practical friendship skills.

This is also why the program is delivered to smaller groups (10-25 students per group).

No – The Friendship Code is free of charge for our local Brimbank schools.

We’ll need:

  • A suitable space (a regular classroom is fine)
  • Access to projector/screen with laptop connectivity (we’ll bring a Windows laptop)
  • A school staff member present to supervise, support student wellbeing and assist with behaviour management if needed
  • A group of willing students ready to engage and participate

Absolutely. We will have a pre-program chat with you to understand the group context and any challenges or themes you’d like addressed.

While the program follows a set structure, we’re flexible and responsive and can tailor components to suit your students’ needs.

The Friendship Code aligns with several key areas of the Victorian Curriculum that focus on students’ personal and social development.

The program support outcomes within both Health and Physical Education and Personal and Social Capability strands. Direct links can be provided upon request.
