Tuning in to Teens helps parents strengthen communication and emotional connection with their teens.

Tuning in to Teens is a free, seven-week parenting program designed for parents and carers of young people who live, work, study or have a connection to Brimbank. The program is especially suited for parents who want to improve connection and better manage everyday challenges with their teenagers.

Across the seven online sessions, parents learn about:

  • Emotional intelligence
  • The five steps of emotion coaching
  • Different parenting styles
  • Practical strategies for managing anger
  • Resolving conflict
  • Promoting emotional self-care

Parents who have completed the program report feeling calmer, more confident, and closer to their teens, with noticeable improvements in their teen’s behaviour and emotional wellbeing.

Who is the program for?

Tuning in to Teens is for parents and carers of young people aged 10–18 who live, work, study or have a connection to Brimbank.

It’s suitable for any parent who wants to strengthen their relationship with their teen and learn new ways to support their emotional development.

You’ll learn practical skills on:

  • Understanding and responding to your teen’s emotions
  • Managing conflict calmly
  • Improving communication
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Emotion coaching
  • Parenting styles
  • Strategies for looking after your own wellbeing

The program runs over seven weekly sessions, held online via Microsoft Teams.

Each session is two hours long and led by trained facilitators in a supportive, small-group environment.

Yes. Each session builds on the previous one, so attending all sessions will help you get the most out of the program.

Yes. This is an interactive group program, not a webinar. Having cameras on helps create a safe and engaging learning space where everyone can participate, connect, and support each other.

No. The program is completely free for parents and carers who live, work, or study in the Brimbank area.

You’re welcome to share your experiences, but there’s no pressure to talk about anything you’re not comfortable with. The sessions are respectful and focused on learning practical skills.

Tuning in to Teens may not be suitable for families currently experiencing family violence, significant mental health issues, or child protection involvement.
