The Bold Source supports young creatives to produce and publish their own annual youth-focused magazine.
The Bold Source is a youth magazine led by an editorial team of young people between the ages of 15 and 25.
The annual magazine is a space to showcase the diverse and layered experiences of young people in Melbourne’s West.
Stories are how we make meaning in the world, and we want to creatively share stories to inspire, educate and uplift!
Editors will:
- Collaborate with other like-minded young people
- Choose a theme for the magazine
- Design and write the submission callout
- Curate and edit submissions from the community
- Interview a notable young person
- Design the magazine flat plan
- Plan a launch event as part of the Brimbank Writers & Readers Festival
We meet once a week from 4.30- 6.30pm in Sunshine.

Frequently Asked Questions
What do I get out of being an editor?
By becoming an editor of the Bold Source, you’ll get to…
- Attend no-cost training workshops with both Council staff and external artists/writers
- Meet other like-minded young people from the community
- Learn the ins and outs of producing a magazine and event planning
- Gain experience to put on your resume
- Tap into your creativity and refine your own writing or art
- Receive an honorarium at the end of the program
I can't make it to all the sessions. Can I still participate?
To receive the honorarium at the end of the program and be acknowledged as an “editor”, participants must attend at least 70-80% of the program sessions.
However, we totally understand if you are sick, in an emergency, or have to prioritise work/studies – as long as you are committed to the program!
If you can’t attend due to having no access to transport, we may be able to assist you. Just let us know when you express your interest.
How is the program delivered?
We meet in-person on Wednesdays from 4:30-6:30pm in Sunshine. Occasionally, we will visit other Brimbank locations, go on excursions, or hold online sessions.
Face-to-face sessions have led to lively discussions and active collaboration and are facilitated by two Brimbank Youth Services workers with Working With Children’s Checks.
Free food is also provided during the session.
If I'm an editor, can I still have my work in the magazine?
Yes! We encourage our editors to submit their own work to be published in the issue.
However, you will not receive submission compensation, as editors receive an honorarium at the end of the program.
