IDAHOBIT 2022

 In Crystal Queer

IDAHOBIT is the International Day Against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination acknowledged on May 17! It is about celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community and working towards eliminating discrimination against LGBTQIA+ identifying people around the world!

IDAHOBIT is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia. IDAHOBIT is about celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community around the world, but also acknowledging the work that still needs to be done to promote inclusion and eliminate discrimination against LGBTQIA+ identifying people.

IDAHOBIT is acknowledged each year on 17 May as it was this day in 1990 (31 years ago!) that homosexuality was removed from the Classification of Disease and Related Health Problems by the World Health Organisation. As a community, we need to stand with our LGBTQIA+ friends and work hard to ensure the LGBTQIA+ community is included and celebrated.

In the lead up to IDAHOBIT day, our Crystal Queer crew have been busy giving the Progress Pride flag outside the VISY Cares Hub a serious facelift and update. To check out the incredible transformation, visit our BYS Instagram here!

Brimbank Youth Services’ LGBTQIA+ program, Crystal Queer will also host the IDAHOBIT Teeth and Tea Par-TEA! This idea has come from program participants and is an opportunity for Crystal Queer members to come together to celebrate their community and have loads of fun. If you are or know a young person aged 12-23 years who identifies with the LGBTQIA+ community or as an ally and may be interested in being part of the Crystal Queer crew, visit our Crystal Queer webpage to find out more and express interest.

To acknowledge IDAHOBIT in 2022, Brimbank Youth Services will also visit a number of schools throughout the week to acknowledge and celebrate the day with students, through creating personalised pronoun badges and playing educational rainbow themed giant Jenga!
