It’s time to meet your 2025 Brimbank Youth Council!
The Brimbank Youth Council is made up of young people in the area, who are motivated, excited and determined to represent the young community of Brimbank.
2025 Brimbank Youth Councillor Julie is a proud Vietnamese-Australian public policy management consultant, who grew up in Brimbank and is regularly involved in grassroots action.
Tell us about yourself!
I’m a proud Vietnamese-Australian who calls Brimbank home — a place that’s shaped so much of who I am. Growing up in one of Melbourne’s most culturally rich and resilient communities has deeply influenced my values around justice, inclusion, sustainability, and climate action. Those values drive me to make a positive impact — both in the everyday interactions I have with people, and in the bigger-picture change I work toward through my career and community involvement.
Professionally, I work as a public policy management consultant, and I’m also deeply involved in youth-led initiatives across Melbourne through organisations like Centre for Multicultural Youth and Australian Youth Climate Coalition. I believe in the power of grassroots action to influence systems — and I carry that belief into everything I do.
Outside of work, you’ll probably find me keeping active with weightlifting and calisthenics, jamming on my bass guitar, hunting for the best pastries in Melbourne, thrifting for unique finds, or catching a rock or funk gig with mates. I’m always chasing new challenges — and new tunes.
Why did you join the BYC?
Brimbank is where I grew up — it’s home in every sense of the word. I joined Brimbank Youth Council because I want to help create a Brimbank where young people feel like they belong, where they feel confident to lead, and where their ideas are genuinely valued. I believe that young people shouldn’t just be included in conversations — they should be helping shape them.
What are you passionate about?
I’m passionate about creating a future where sustainability, inclusion, and belonging aren’t just buzzwords — they’re realities for everyone. I care about building systems that work for young people and with young people, especially those from diverse backgrounds. Youth empowerment isn’t a side goal — it’s the starting point for real, long-lasting change.
What are you hoping to achieve as a BYC member this year?
This year, I want to help create more inclusive, accessible spaces for young people — spaces that don’t just support them, but equip them. I’m passionate about working with Council and community organisations to make sure young people have the resources, knowledge, and confidence to shape their own pathways and lead change in their lives and communities.
That also means recognising how young people connect and influence today — especially through digital platforms and new media. I want to explore how we can use those tools in safe, creative, and positive ways to build stronger communities and spark real impact.
What does a better Brimbank look like to you?
A better Brimbank is a place where every young person feels like they can thrive — where they don’t just exist, but belong. It’s a community where diverse cultures are celebrated, where access to opportunity is fair, and where young people feel safe, supported, and excited about the future.
What’s one piece of advice you have for young people who want to create change in their community?
Big or small, change always starts with the people around you. Start a conversation. Be curious. Connect with your neighbours, friends, family — even your local café owner. You’d be surprised how powerful community energy can be when people start rallying together. You don’t need to have all the answers — just the courage to start.
