It’s time to meet your 2025 Brimbank Youth Council!
The Brimbank Youth Council is made up of young people in the area, who are motivated, excited and determined to represent the young community of Brimbank.
2025 Brimbank Youth Councillor Jayda is a Year 8 student at St Albans Secondary College and a natural sports-star. Find out more about her below!
Tell us more about yourself!
Hi! My name is Jayda Luong. I have proven myself to be a dedicated, dynamic, passionate and hard-working team player and leader. Basketball is my favourite hobby, but I also enjoy playing netball and both long-distance and short-distance running. Beyond sports, I am deeply interested in psychology, like how the mind works mentally, emotionally, and socially.
Why did you join the BYC?
I joined the Brimbank Youth Council for multiple reasons. One of them being that I was a member of the Brimbank Young Dynamics Citizens in Year 6. Back then, I was the vice-school captain of my primary school and was invited to attend meetings throughout the term with other primary school leaders around the community.
Another reason is that I want to build up my confidence in public speaking, and interacting with others in general. I also want to learn more about the community and support those in need, whether that is hearing them out about their issues with or bringing [their suggestions] back to meetings to ensure there is a chance to [be heard].
What are you passionate about?
I am deeply passionate about young people’s mental health and mindset because I understand the challenges this generation faces. Throughout my life, I have been committed to exploring different ways young people can prevent mental health struggles, beyond just talking about them. I recognise that not everyone feels comfortable opening up about their struggles, and I believe in finding alternative approaches to support and strengthen mental well-being.
What are you hoping to achieve as a BYC member this year?
I hope to strengthen my collaborative skills by actively engaging in meaningful discussions and listening to others’ perspectives with an open mind and confidently sharing my own ideas.
Through the Brimbank Youth Council, I aim to be part of a team that creates real change for people. I want to help shape initiatives that support youth mental health, amplify voices that often go unheard, and build a more inclusive environment where everyone feels supported, valued, and inspired to thrive. I believe that by working together, we can make a difference, turning ideas into action and ensuring that all young people have the opportunities and resources they need for a better community.
What does a better Brimbank look like to you?
A better Brimbank to me looks like an inclusive community where everyone is shown that they are respected and connected in a positive manner. It is a place where young people feel safe to express themselves, where diversity is celebrated, and where no one feels left behind. I imagine a Brimbank that uplifts its community through equal opportunities, strong support systems, and spaces that encourage growth, creativity, and belonging.
What’s one piece of advice you have for young people who want to create change in their community?
My advice for young people who want to make a difference in their community is to just go for it. Don’t wait for the “perfect” moment, start with what you have and where you are. As long as your intentions come from a genuine place and you want to create positive change, that is what truly matters. Get involved, and do not be afraid to share your ideas. Your passion, no matter how big or small, can inspire others and help shape a better future for everyone.
