Meet Jessie: Your 2025 Brimbank Youth Councillor

It’s time to meet your 2025 Brimbank Youth Council!

The Brimbank Youth Council is made up of young people in the area, who are motivated, excited and determined to represent the young community of Brimbank.

2025 Brimbank Youth Councillor Jessie is an Urban Planning student at RMIT, who has lived in different parts of Brimbank throughout her life. Find out more about her below!

Tell us about yourself!

I’m currently a third year urban planning student at RMIT. I’ve lived in different parts of Brimbank throughout mylife, including Braybrook, Ardeer and Sydenham. In my free time, I like to expand my music tastes and learn songs on the piano and ukulele. I love to go on walks and hikes (got to get those 10,000 steps in). I’m currently really into birdwatching and taking photos of landscapes during those adventures!

Why did you join the BYC?

What attracted me about BYC is the opportunity to understand the behind-the-scenes and nuances required for social projects to take place. I also think it would be really interesting to see how my studies can relate to council processes and empower young people. I found it really cool to see how previous BYC members advocated and created a meaningful impact on the community, and realised I could be part of it myself too, and so can any of you!

What are you passionate about?

I’m particularly drawn to youth engagement with the community and council. In recent times, I’ve noticed a growing disconnect between what young people really value and the opportunities currently available to them. In this digital age and rise in mental health issues, many youth feel uncertain about their future, which is why it is more important than ever that young people can rely on and feel supported by their council and community. That’s why I believe councils play a major role in creating safe and inclusive spaces that can guide young people towards meaningful pathways and relationships.

What are you hoping to achieve as a BYC member this year?

This year I am hoping to help our team turn our chosen social issue into a meaningful and actionable event. My aim is to know that through these initiatives, we have made a real difference, as long as it has positively impact at least one affected young person’s life. That to me is what makes it worth it.

What does a better Brimbank look like to you?

To me, a better Brimbank is one where every single resident feels a genuine connection to their community. Where no one feels alone or overlooked, and as though they can reach out for support when needed. It is also a place where all residents have equitable access to high quality public amenities and essential resources such as activity centres and hygiene products.

What’s one piece of advice you have for young people who want to create change in their community?

My advice is to look into the opportunities available by your local council, such as the BYC where you can meet similar minded people who share the same passion for social change! Also, change can come in all sizes, even small actions, like a simple act of kindness, can have a meaningful impact on someone’s day.
