Youth voice opportunities
- Brimbank’s Resilience Survey data told us that 50% of female secondary students are not engaged in physical activity and activities outside of school. BYS have developed a survey to understand more about participation, barriers and attitudes toward physical activity and help inform new programs that support this group to be active and connected. By completing the survey, young people can also enter the draw to win a $30 Rebel Sport Voucher and BYS Prize Pack. This survey is open to female-identifying and non-binary people aged 12-19; survey closes 20/08/2023. Survey can be accessed via link – https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BYSletsgetphysical
- The Y is hosting a Youth Fest Event called GenZen: Revive & Thrive, a day retreat in nature for young people aged 14-17 years old on Thursday, 28 September. The day includes transport and meals and is completely free and open to young Victorians state wide. If you have any young people who might be interested in attending can express their interest here by 31 August.
- Brimbank and Maribyrnong Youth Services have collaborated once again to host one of the very first LGBTQIA+ Youth Soirees at the end of the year (December). This Soiree is a formal like event, in which will be a safe space for LGBTQIA+ identifying young people to have some fun, feel affirmed and dance the night away. They are currently taking applications for LGBTQIA+ identify and ally young people, 15 – 25 years of age, who may be interested in taking part in our Soiree Working Group! This group will plan the event and make the night special. Apply here by 18 July.
- Butterfly Foundation is establishing a Body Kind Youth Advisory Group to inform their prevention programs, including a brand new education program for secondary schools that will explore the complex relationship between body image and social media, Body Kind Online Education. They want to young people aged 13-17, currently enrolled in Australian secondary school who are ideally curious about body image and/or social media. This group will inform/influence the development of the project, attend online meetings and activities, review materials, and share their insights and opinions as to how we can make this program relevant, engaging and beneficial for young people. Young people with parental/guardian consent can apply here.
- YDAS is running a free online leadership program for young Victorians who identify as having a disability, chronic illness, being blind or vision impaired, being Deaf, neurodiverse and/or having lived experience of mental health issues. Participants who join get to grow their leadership and advocacy skills, gain confidence working in a team and get opportunities for jobs and volunteering. Learn more and apply here by 7 August.

- Bangerang and Wiradjuri Elder Geraldine Atkinson, Co-Chair of the First Peoples’ Assembly who has for decades has been a strong voice in areas such as education, justice, reconciliation and family violence.
- Yorta Yorta man Ian Hamm, chair of the Board of Directors of First Nations Foundation, Koorie Heritage Trust among other appointments.
- Kristen Rundle, professor of law at Melbourne Law School, providing a legal perspective on the Voice.
- Skate Learn Connect is coming to Keilor Downs Skate Park (Opposite Brimbank Aquatic and Wellness Centre)! Join us for an afternoon of skateboarding for young people aged 12-24, skills workshops, youth employment support and advice, free snacks, and giveaways. Sign up via this link or just turn up!
- Brimbank‘s Draft LGBTQIA+ Action Plan has just a week left of it’s community consultation left. This is open for the public to give feedback, deadline to have your say is on 27 July. Read the draft plan and give feedback here. Flyer.
- VHBA is hosting a Spotlight event on Hepatitis B on Thursday 3 August, register here.
- Brimbank Youth Arts have released the latest newsletter of upcoming activities and events. Read here.
- Match Works is hosting an amazing Rainbow Community Fair in Footscray on the 26th of July! It is a great opportunity for LGBTQIA+ and Ally identifying communities to come together and connect in an amazing way! Amongst other amazing opportunities, Joy FM and the Star Observer will also be present on the day to offer attendees opportunities to share their dream passions in their media corner! They are also offering services, organisations and community groups a chance to host a free stall on the day. Flyer.
Programs
- Hume Youth Services is running the Level Up program, a workshop series that will equip young people aged 16 to 24 with the skills and mindset they need to start a business or enter the workforce. Topics include financial literacy, public speaking, leadership and more. Program will begin in August, register here. Flyer.
- Jesuit Social Services delivers the Navigator program that supports disengaged young people aged 12 to 17 in Brimbank or Melton who have attended 30% or less of the previous school term, or not attending an education setting at all. Referrals are made via this form, information about eligibility and requirements are here, and information for schools here and for other service providers here. Flyer.
- Arts Access Victoria is running Nexus, a free professional development program to tools they need to be a professional artist. This includes budgeting, bios, public speaking, grant writing and more. Nexus aims to give artists the tools to create a sustainable career in the arts. Nexus was originally created with mental health in mind, and that is still a strong part of the program. It’s suited to emerging artists, however, even more established artists need a refresher every now and then. This is also a chance to meet other Deaf and Disabled artists and build your community. Program is run over 8 sessions, starting on 3 August. More information and application form here.
- Edmund Rice Community & Refugee Services delivers the We Connect Mentoring Program for young people aged between 12 and 16. This program aims to increase meaningful social connections, educational engagement, and employment pathways for young people. There are two streams to this mentoring program, which include opportunities to go on excursions and camps:
Training
- genU Training deliver a range of short courses and certificates for free of cost for eligible individuals. Read more here.
- YDAS is providing FREE Together: Access & Inclusion Training for workers who want to become more confident & capable working with disabled young people! These free sessions are funded by the Department of Social Services and are the final free Together Trainings YDAS will be offering. Sessions are run online, and learn how to navigate the impact of assumptions, use language about disability and more. Register the coming up sessions:
Survey
- RMIT is conducting a research project on communication between schools and non-English speaking families. They want to run focus groups or one-on-one interviews with Multicultural Educational Aides, and other school workers that engage with non-English speaking families. Apply your interest to participate here or contact PhD student Elvira Bianchi here.
- University of Melbourne wants to hear new ideas about how to support young people after an early encounter with police. They are looking for young people aged 16-29 who have had a past encounter with police, either reporting a minor crime or being arrested for one. The young people can be part of a small group discussion or an interview and will be paid a $50 eGift care as thanks for their time. Learn more and apply here.
- Prevention United are launching our discussion paper “Reimagining Youth Mental Health: A discussion paper about how to tackle the youth mental health crisis.” They want to hear your thoughts on the causes driving the dramatic increase in youth mental health conditions, and the wellbeing and prevention programs and public policy solutions you think governments should implement to reverse this trend.
