Tell us more about yourself!
My name is Kara and I’m 25 years old. I was born in the Philippines, but I grew up in New Zealand and then moved here in 2015. My hobbies include playing music with my band Green Eagle, gardening and fishing.
Why did you join the BYC?
Creating positive change within my community has always been a personal goal. BYC seemed like the perfect way to do that and I’m thrilled to be a part of this great team.
What are you passionate about?
I’m passionate about creating safe spaces for kids who are seeking a sense of community. Kids might find it in the wrong places but with our guidance and support, we could lead them back on the right path.
Brimbank is a wonderfully diverse area and coming from an immigrant background myself, I can empathise with their struggles.
What are you hoping to achieve as a BYC member this year?
I look forward to working on a project with my fellow youth councillors. No matter what we choose to do, I’ll be happy if we can help even one individual with their struggles.
What does a better Brimbank look like to you?
A better Brimbank to me is a place with less litter, more free and accessible recreation centres and more sustainable and green practices.
What’s one piece of advice you have for young people who want to create change in their community?
My advice is that if there’s something you’re passionate about like planting trees or food security, go online and look up where you can get involved then sign up. Taking that first step is the key and you’ll often find many like-minded individuals who are just as passionate as you.
