🤔❓ Did you know that Brimbank has a Youth Council? Now you do! It’s with great pleasure to introduce to you our 2021 Brimbank Youth Councillor Candace Colaco!

Name: Candace Colaco

Pronouns: She/Her

Suburb: Taylors Lakes

Tell us more about yourself!

I enjoy being outdoors and as active as possible, whether this be bike rides, walks, trails or hikes! I’m all about the environment and being amongst it. In contrast to this I do love my down time, listening to music and hanging out with my friends! I’m a super friendly and passionate individual who just wants to make a change!

Why did you join the BYC?

To be part of something bigger and to make a change even if its on a smaller scale. “Act Local, Think Global”, as they say! Having grown up in this council, I wanted to be involved and amongst the community, BYC provided the perfect opportunity!

What are you passionate about?

The Environment is a topic that more young people need to focus on! We need to look further into the importance of conserving our environment and reducing our waste where possible. This is a topic that hits close to home as I have started up my own initiative, ‘Little Litter Project’, educating others on the importance of issues such as “Plastic Pollution” and “Waste Managment”. This is relevant to our Brimbank Community as it starts of in our homes and being aware of what we are throwing away and how we are making small changes day to day.

What are you hoping to achieve as a BYC member this year?

I’m hoping to learn about what is happening within my council and be apart of some change no matter how small or big it is! Whether this be through projects, events or meeting new people!

What does a better Brimbank look like to you?

A better Brimbank looks like a safe and friendly place to live, with clean open spaces for the community to visit and information accessible to all ages! It is a place where people look out for one another and can put forward ideas to shape Brimbank in a positive way!

What’s one piece of advice you have for young people who want to create change in their community

To go for it! There is so much you can do these days to create change! We are lucky with social media and all these other platforms that we can have a voice and reach so many people! Take action, sign that petition, start those conversations, create that page and believe in yourself 100%!
