Happy Pride Month! June is the time for celebrating LGBTQIA+ communities – from the old to the young. As Brimbank Youth Services is all about supporting our youth, here are five services helping queer youth survive and thrive.

1. Crystal Queer

Crystal Queer is a weekly social program by Brimbank Youth Services, catered for young LGBTQIA+ people and allies. It’s a safe and fun place to hang out, explore your identity, and learn more about the community. In the past, participants have created a podcast, organised an LGBTQIA+ Soiree, hosted movie screenings as part of Midsumma Festival, and more!

2. queerspace

queerspace is a health and wellbeing support service for LGBTQIA+ people across Australia. They offer counselling, case management, individual advocacy, family education, support programs, and can help you access LGBTQIA+ friendly healthcare options. There’s even queerspace youth, a program specifically for LGTBQIA+ and questioning young people aged 18 to 25.

3. Minus18

Minus18 is Australia’s charity for LGBTQIA+ youth, providing education and life-affirming programs to tackle social isolation. While they offer training for workplaces and schools, they also host the well-known Queer Formal, reporting that more than 60,000 LGBTQIA+ youth have attended since 2011. They also run a Discord server and Young Leaders program for those aged 12 to 19.

4. Switchboard

Switchboard is a community-led not-for-profit providing care, connection, support, and advocacy for LGBTQIA+ people (and those who support them). They run Rainbow Door, a free helpline to help queer people navigate the system; QLife, a free LGBTQIA+ peer support and referral service; CHARLEE, a suicide prevention hub made by LGBTQIA+ people; and more.

Victorian Pride Centre

5. Victorian Pride Centre

The Victorian Pride Centre is Australia’s first purpose-built space for LGBTQIA+ communities, housing events, services, and other major LGBTQIA+ organisations. There’s always something happening at the centre for young people to find belonging in their community, whether it’s masterclasses, workshops, talks, performances, or even just your humble sausage sizzle.
