Tell us more about yourself!
Hi, I’m Shivam Palta. I’m 18 years old, currently studying a double degree in Law and Commerce. I’m passionate about grassroots leadership and strengthening our community from the ground up. I’ve always believed that real change begins locally, through listening, collaboration and meaningful action. That belief is what drives my involvement in public life.
Outside of study and council, I’m actively involved in youth advocacy, multicultural engagement and community outreach. I’m proud to call Brimbank home and want to help make it a place where all young people feel seen, valued and empowered to lead, connect and grow.
Why did you join the BYC?
I joined the Brimbank Youth Council to grow as a leader and to be part of something bigger than myself. BYC gives young people a real platform to voice ideas and drive change. For me, this is about more than just representation. It’s about action. I want to leave a lasting impact on my community, especially in areas like sustainability, youth engagement, and civic participation.
What are you passionate about?
I’m deeply passionate about building a greener and more inclusive Brimbank. I believe our environment reflects our values, and investing in green spaces is a direct investment in our mental health, lifestyle, and future. I’m also committed to helping young people find their voice and feel confident in leading change, especially in our diverse western suburbs where culture and community are our greatest strengths.
What are you hoping to achieve as a BYC member this year?
This year, I want to help deliver real outcomes for young people. That includes pushing for more accessible community spaces, championing environmental initiatives, and improving youth involvement in local decision-making.
I also hope to inspire more young leaders to step up, speak out, and shape the future of Brimbank.
What does a better Brimbank look like to you?
To me, a better Brimbank is one where everyone feels a deep sense of belonging. It is a place where community isn’t just a word. It is a lived experience. That means more shared spaces, more opportunities for youth, and a culture where every voice matters. A Brimbank that leads by example environmentally, socially, and culturally.
What’s one piece of advice you have for young people who want to create change in their community?
Believe in your potential, even when others don’t. You don’t need a title to be a leader. You just need the courage to care and the persistence to act. Start with what you have, where you are, and never underestimate the power of your voice. Change begins the moment you decide you’re ready to be the one who makes it.
