Youth voice opportunities

  • Brimbank Youth Services is excited to launch The Bold Source Issue 4: Social Justice in Action on Friday, 22 March at 6PM at Sunshine Social. Join young people for an evening of readings, music performances and more. RSVP here.

  • Headspace Sunshine is recruiting for its Youth Advisory Group for 2024! More information and apply here.

Events and opportunities

  • Brimbank Youth Arts is hosting an open mic night on Thursday 28 March! Register here.
  • Brimbank Libraries is hosting its annual Writers and Readers Festival 14-23 March 2024. Check out the program brochure here. Website.
  • Youth Junction Inc. is hosting Summer Sundown, an program of activities, outdoor games (including table tennis, bowling and more!) and prizes for young people! Held every Friday at 3PM-5PM until 22 March at the Visy Cares Hub in Sunshine. There’s free food and drinks too! Flyer

Programs

  • CMY is offering One to One Mentoring for young people of refugee background, where they match volunteer mentors to provide guidance to young people for 1 year with a broad range of supports, including settlement support, homework, education and career pathways, improving English and more. This is for Young people of refugee background aged 14-25 who live work or study in Maribyrnong, Brimbank, Yarra, Darebin areas. Referrals are accepted throughout the year, contact Gabrielle Orosz, Program Coordinator at info@helpinghandproject.org.au if interested.
  • EdConnect is a charity seeking volunteers to assist in a school breakfast club at a local high school in Sydenham area. More information and apply here.
  • IPC Health & Brimbank Council are running Women’s Gym Classes at Sunshine Leisure Centre on Sundays between 3:45-5:00pm. The program is aimed to enhance physical activity and promote health and well-being among this population group. Flyer
  • Sydenham Neighbourhood House is offering a DJ come-and-try workshop this upcoming school holidays for young people aged 13 and up in Brimbank! Express interest here and contact Jon at jons@brimbank.vic.gov.au for any questions.
  • Sydenham Neighbourhood House is running a range of different programs for the community:
    • Beginner hip-hop dance classes for young people aged 13-18 interested in dance, looking for after school activity. Held Wednesdays 4PM-5PM during school term. Register here. Flyer
    • Young @ Heart program is an opportunity for young people aged 15-24 to be paid to upskill seniors on how to use their phones, tablets, and apps. Register here. Flyer
    • Free Maths & English tutoring – Get assistance with your school work from an experienced tutor. Suitable for VCE Maths (General, Methods & Specialist), Year 7-10 Maths and Year 7-10 English. Every Friday during school term, 4PM-5PM. Register here.
  • Brimbank Youth Services has closed registrations to their Tuning in to Teens Term 1 program. This free 7 week program is targeted to parents/carers (with a child/children aged 10-18 years) in Brimbank and aims to increase parent-child connection by improving emotional communication in the family.   • Brotherhood of St Laurence is running a pilot next year for families of a child age 0-5 with developmental concerns (who aren’t eligible for an NDIS plan). We will see them for 20 sessions across year. If you have any families who may be appropriate for this pilot then please get in touch. I have attached the flyer for further information. Flyer.
  • batyr is a preventative mental health organisation for young people and will be offering free programs to schools in 2024. Check out their program details:

Survey and Research

  • YACVic is running research on how to better support trans and gender diverse young people. The survey is open to anyone who works with, supports or engages with LGBTQIA+ young people, and the findings will inform YACVic’s submission to the Australian Human Right’s Commission’s project. Complete this 10-15 minute survey by 5 April.
